Quick with large portions. The restaurant itself is rather dirty which makes we worried about what the kitchen looks like
Generally, the tastes like what you would expect. Our chicken Katsu plate was so large, my husband and I could share it! Other than that likely, won't be back unless we are craving Hawaiian barbecue and are in the area. -

To be quite honest, between all of the places I (still) have bookmarked on Yelp and just the overall wealth of options that Oahu has to offer, Loco Moco Drive Inn wasn't exactly high on my list of places to try. In fact, if not for my coworker and all of those trips he used to make here back in high school, I never would've known this place even existed! Even if I had, I wouldn't have jumped at trying them, given their relatively low Yelp ratings. Now that I have though, I gotta say - the food wasn't all that bad!
Given their name, as well as the serious loco moco hankering I had been nursing for most of our trip, I would've asked my coworker to pick up an order for me had I known where he was stopping off to grab lunch for the house. Instead, I ended up jumping at his offer to pick up a second order of his "MOCHIKO CHICKEN RICE PLATE" for me. Of course, it didn't hurt when he mentioned it was also his favorite thing here. I mean, he'd be the one to know what they do best after all of this trips he used to make here!
As I popped open the lid, I was actually pretty surprised by how good the food looked. Two scoops of rice, a scoop of mac salad, and a heaping mound of mochiko chicken? Not bad! After a few bites though, I admittedly wasn't quite as impressed. Thankfully, the mochiko chicken didn't let me down - meaty and moist, though the batter could've used a bit more seasoning and it wasn't super crisp (though, that's more from steaming itself in the box). The mac salad and the rice, on the other hand, did, as the former was kind of bland and a little wet/watery while the latter bordered on mealy.
Now, since I never actually made my way here, I obviously can't comment on anything but what I ate. Which, overall, I didn't find as bad as some of my fellow Yelpers did. As far as price goes, Loco Moco Drive Inn's menu is pretty budget friendly (my coworker said it was about $10 for a regular order), especially compared to some of those food court eateries around Waikiki. Still, I can't say for sure I'll ever be back. Sure, if I'm in the complex and want something cheap. Otherwise, given the choice, I'd rather head to Zippy's for something on the go. -

One thing that I love about the Loco Moco Drive inns is that all of their food is cooked fresh and hot for every order. My friend was visiting from Texas and wanted to eat at a local spot. This place has such a wide variety of items to choose from, so this was the ideal spot.
My mochiko Chicken was only a mini and came with lots of chicken and rice. I believe the price is fair for the amount of food you get. I opted out of Mac salad and received all rice.
The Loco moco was delicious! My friend absolutely loved his meal! The restaurant was very clean and staff was friendly. I would definitely recommend stopping by here if you are in the Hawaii Kai area! -

My sister picked up food for the family, beef stew plate, chicken katsu, etc. We started to dig in and she noticed that there were some black marks on her beef. After scraping off the tomato sauce we saw black rings of mold growing out of the meat. We peeled back the chunks of meat and sure enough the black was growing into the food. Several chunks of beef were infested with mold! My brother in law went back to Loco Moco Drive-inn and demanded an explanation. The workers just told him the black spots are from when they cooked it and the stew was made fresh that day! My family is ever eating here again. This type of poor food handling is negligent to the extreme!

I normally like the food here, but today they screwed up my call-in order, only 2 plates, and I had to drive all the way back.
I had to show her the receipt that said Katsu/Curry, but the chicken katsu had no Curry and no dipping sauce (which is fine if there was Curry on it).
All they did was apologize and give me a container of Curry, so I could take my no-longer-hot or crispy katsu and take it all the way back home to eat it.
Two trips, an additional 45 minutes of my time I didn't have to spare, to eat cold food.
Not happy.
